Nana B Announces Demo Over ¢1 Petroleum Levy

The National Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, known as Nana B, has announced plans to pour out onto the streets of Kumasi to protest the ¢1 upward adjustment in the Energy Debt Recovery Levy.

The protest is being organized by the Coalition of Political Parties (COPP) which weeks ago staged a demonstration against the removal of the suspended Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

“Coalition of Political Parties (COPP) to hit the streets in Kumasi against the Obnoxious and Wicked Dumsor levy implemented by Mahama,” he wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

The Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson on June 2, 2025, presented a Bill to amend the Energy Sector Levies Act, 2025 (Act 1135) to bring into effect an increment projected to rake in about GHC 15 bn this year.

According to him, the aim is to raise additional revenue to support the payment of energy sector shortfalls, reduce energy sector legacy debts and stabilise power supply.

He stated that the levy will serve as a dedicated source of funding to the energy sector and the proceeds will be earmarked for the procurement of liquid fuel for power generation given that the current electricity tariff paid by consumers does not include the cost of fuel used for power generation.

Ato Forson argued that the power sector risks imminent collapse if measures are not taken to cover the shortfalls.
