Govt Playing Its Role to Strengthen Cedi, Citizens Must Do Theirs- Finance Minister

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has encouraged citizens to take up their role in the quest to strengthen the cedi.

According to him, the government remains committed to fiscal discipline, which has sponsored the 37% appreciation of the cedi.

Speaking at the launch of the Cedi at 60 celebration by the Bank of Ghana on October 28, 2025, he said, “As managers of the economy, we have remained steadfast in our duty to ensure a strong and stable Cedi. Our strong commitment to fiscal discipline has contributed to the strengthening of the currency.”

He was also quick to point out that effectively strengthening the cedi is a shared role.
“As citizens, we have a role to play. We must maintain the sanctity of the Cedi as a legal tender by preserving it with dignity and protecting it jealously. We must all be vanguards of its value, by eschewing acts that seek to undermine its value, particularly the pricing of goods and services in foreign currencies.”

He encouraged pricing in cedis, stressing that the ‘US dollar is not our currency’.

Dr Ato Forson was critical about the disadvantages such activities have on the local currency.

“The continuous pricing of goods and services in US dollars will only hurt us. Let’s stop it! The Cedi is the only currency we have. Let us protect it. Let us trade with it. Let us defend it. Let us talk about it with pride, not as a burden, but as a badge of economic independence.”
