Man Takes Bank Hostage To Get His Savings
A Lebanese man identified as Bassam Al-Sheikh Hussein last Thursday stormed a branch of a bank where he saves with a gun to demand for some of his $210,000 savings to pay for his father’s medical bills.
The Food delivery driver has been hailed as a hero following his resistance to the bank’s policy that restricts customers from withdrawing huge sums of money due to the ravaging economy of the country.
Reports indicate that his savings in the bank was from the sale of his house and that of his parent’s.
“He sold his house and that of his parents’ and deposited it at the Federal Bank of Lebanon”, it is reported.
WION reports that on August 11, Hussein went to the Beirut branch of the bank to withdraw but was refused the amount he requested so he went back to get a shotgun and held the bank hostage.
Hussein is said to have threatened to kill the customers and set himself on fire in the bank if his money was not given back to him.
In front of the bank was a crowd who cheered Hussein on in support of his action against the Bank and called him a hero for the bold step he took.
Eventually, it is reported that the bank agreed to give $35,000 in exchange for the hostages to get fed.
He surrendered to the police after a seven-hour standoff, reports say.
“None of the hostages were hurt, no money was stolen” , WION reported.
The Federal Bank filed a lawsuit against Hussein.
