Kumasi Mayor Hosts Canadian Delegation to Explore Waste-to-Energy Solutions for Oti Landfill

The Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, has welcomed a delegation from the Canadian Embassy to discuss challenges at the Oti Landfill Site and explore sustainable waste management options.
The visit on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, followed a directive from His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, for the Assembly to engage partners on solutions to the landfill’s operational and environmental challenges.
The delegation was led by Mr Craig Latimer, Chief Executive Officer of Portage Energy Group, a company specialised in Waste-to-Energy technology that converts waste into sustainable energy for development.

As part of the engagement, the team toured the Oti Landfill Site to assess conditions on the ground first-hand.
They also met with the management of JSO Waste Ltd, the facility’s operator, to understand the current state of operations and identify possible areas of collaboration.
The KMA said the visit forms part of ongoing efforts to find innovative and sustainable approaches to waste management that can improve sanitation, protect the environment, and create long-term benefits for residents of Kumasi.

The Assembly said it will continue to work with local and international partners to advance practical solutions for the city’s growing waste challenge.
