Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong Warns Media Against Normalising Insults Against Chiefs, Other Leaders

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has expressed deep concern over what he describes as the growing culture of disrespect and mediocrity in Ghana’s public conversations.

He cautioned that the increasing acceptance of insults directed at leaders, public figures, and institutions poses a serious threat to national discipline and unity.

Speaking in an interview with Kofi Boakye on Opemsuo Radio’s Nkwantannanso, Mr Agyepong lamented that Ghanaians have begun to treat verbal abuse and personal attacks as normal features of political and social discourse.

“We cannot accept mediocrity as normal, so when people insult, we shouldn’t accept it as normal,” he said, urging the media and the public to help restore decency and civility in public debate.

He called on the media, in particular, to be mindful of the power they wield in shaping public opinion.

“The media must be careful — insulting politicians, chiefs, presidents…,” he cautioned.

Agyepong stressed that discipline and courtesy are foundational values that must not be lost in Ghana’s democratic space.

Also the former NPP General Secretary said his guiding principle in politics is rooted in honesty and moral conviction. According to him, leadership should be defined by a willingness to defend what is right, regardless of personal or political consequences.

“I want to be an advocate for the right things to be done in this country,” he said.

“Even if it will cost me politically, I don’t mind. I want to be known as someone who fought for what is good.”
