GHS Ready For Covid Vaccination Campaign From Tomorrow

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced a seventh COVID-19 vaccination drive across the country from tomorrow, July 19, 2023.

This round of covid vaccination will end on Sunday, July 23, 2023.

It is being conducted under the theme “Protect yourself, Protect your Family. Get vaccinated Against Covid-19 Now!”

In May 2023, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced Covid was longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

WHO premised the declaration on the decline in covid-related death trends, hospitalisations, and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions.

That notwithstanding, the WHO urged countries to integrate COVID-19 vaccination into life course vaccination programmes as part of recommendations.

The Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Manager of the GHS, Dr Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, at an event to mark the launch of the GHS campaign on July 18 highlighted that though the international emergency is over, the same cannot be said for the pandemic.

“As we transition into a better integration of Covid-19 response into the health care delivery system, vaccination becomes even more critical as a tool for a possible focal outbreak.”

So far, the GHS said 10,836,466 have been double vaxxed while 13,920,869 have received at least one dose.

Dr Achiano noted that beyond the end of the vaccination campaign, the GHS will continue vaccination in medical facilities in the country.

Globally, there have been 191,922 new covid cases. Ghana contributes to one of the cases.
