Ghana’s 1200MW Thermal Power Project ‘Firmly on Course’, Energy Minister Reports

Ghana’s planned 1200MW thermal power initiative is progressing steadily, with preparatory and implementation works advancing as scheduled, Minister for Energy John Jinapor has said.

After engaging Ghana Thermal Power Ltd., the special purpose vehicle set up by the government to execute the project, Mr Jinapor said he had been briefed on the significant progress made so far.

“The progress achieved thus far is a strong indication that this landmark initiative is firmly on course and will play a transformative role in the development of Ghana’s energy sector and the broader economy,” he stated.

The 1200MW thermal power project is part of the government’s strategy to expand generation capacity and end the cycle of power instability.

According to the Minister, the initiative is aimed at delivering reliable and sustainable electricity to support industry, businesses, and households.

The government remains committed to increasing generation capacity to ensure a consistent supply of electricity at all times, Mr Jinapor added, saying the effort aligns with the broader vision of building a resilient, efficient, and future-ready energy sector for national development.

The project is expected to strengthen Ghana’s energy security and reduce the country’s exposure to supply shortfalls that have disrupted economic activity in previous years.
