Ghana Repatriates 327 Nationals Hit by Demolition in Abidjan – Foreign Affairs Ministry

The Government of Ghana is repatriating 327 Ghanaians affected by an ongoing mass demolition exercise in Port Bouet Municipality, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

In a statement, the Ministry said 228 of the affected nationals arrived in Ghana on Thursday, June 11, 2026, after losing their homes and livelihoods to the demolition.

The remaining 99 are expected to return today, Friday, June 12, 2026.

“All three hundred and twenty-seven (327) Ghanaian nationals were previously residing in areas affected by the demolition exercise and became stranded, having lost their sources of livelihood and lacking the means to secure alternative accommodation in Côte d’Ivoire,” the Ministry stated.

To support the returnees, the Government has provided buses and trucks to convey them and their belongings free of charge back to Ghana.

The Ministry said the gesture forms part of efforts to ensure their safe return and reintegration.

The Ministry further disclosed that Ivorian authorities have expressed willingness to compensate victims of the demolition. Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue coordination to ensure affected nationals receive the promised compensation.

“The Government of Ghana remains committed to the welfare and protection of Ghanaians and will intensify efforts to provide the necessary support to ensure the successful return and reintegration of the affected individuals,” the statement added.

The Ministry expressed appreciation to Côte d’Ivoire authorities and all stakeholders for their cooperation in facilitating the repatriation.
