Ghana Police Denies Stealing Electricity

The Ghana Police Service has denied engaging in power theft and illegal power connections at the Osu Police Barracks in the Greater Accra region and the Kumasi Central Police Station in the Ashanti region.

In reaction to the news, the Service said it has no need to engage in such illegality since the payment of its electricity bills is centrally managed.

The ECG in a statement on March 30 said its task force detected illegal connections at the Osu Police Barracks and disconnected them from the national grid.

The statement said the ECG personnel were detained at the premises by police officers for the action.

In a press statement on Thursday, April 20, the Police confirmed that three buildings at the police Barracks were not connected to any electricity meter. A similar thing was discovered at the Kumasi Central Police Station.

According to the police, an investigation sanctioned by the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akufo Dampare, revealed that all the connections which are now being described as “illegal” were done by the ECG.

“Investigations further established that all the connections at the Police Barracks and the Kumasi Central Police Station were done by the ECG directly to the pole since the ECG had indicated that it did not have any meter available at the time. In both instances, the connections were done by officials of the ECG.”

Following this discovery by the police, the statement said, Dr Dampare held a meeting with the Management of the ECG during which their findings were presented to them.

According to the police, the Management of the ECG accepted the findings and expressed regrets over the situation.

Meanwhile, the police are reexamining their electricity connection and metering system in police facilities nationwide.
