Ghana Joins G7++ FoGG Talks in France to Tackle Gulf of Guinea Maritime Threats

Ghana’s delegation is in France to participate in the G7++ Friends of the Gulf of Guinea (FoGG) meeting, reinforcing the country’s commitment to regional maritime security and cooperation.

The delegation was headed by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Brogya Gyemfi, and joined by Ghana’s Ambassador to France, H.E. Mavis Ama Frimpong.

The G7++ FoGG platform brings together coastal states, G7 partners, and international stakeholders to coordinate responses to piracy, illicit trafficking, and other maritime threats in the Gulf of Guinea.

This year’s sessions focused on enhancing information-sharing among navies and maritime agencies, improving operational coordination at sea, and deepening partnerships that support stability and economic resilience across the region.

Participants reviewed progress on joint patrols, capacity-building programmes, and legal frameworks needed to prosecute maritime crimes.

Discussions also covered emerging threats such as cyber risks to port infrastructure and the use of unregulated fishing vessels for illicit activities.

This reaffirms Ghanai’s support for collaborative approaches to securing the Gulf of Guinea, noting that safe maritime routes are critical for trade, fisheries, and the blue economy. Ghana has been an active member of regional security initiatives, contributing naval assets and personnel to multinational exercises and information-sharing centres aimed at reducing piracy incidents.

The G7++ FoGG meeting is expected to produce updated action points to strengthen maritime domain awareness and response mechanisms among member states in the coming year.
