Ghana Declares First Child Labour Free Zone In Atwima Mponua And Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai

Ghana has taken a major step in the fight against child labour with the declaration of the country’s first Child Labour Free Zone, covering the Atwima Mponua District in the Ashanti Region and the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai area in the Western North Region.
The landmark initiative was announced on July 7, 2026, by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, together with the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Hon. Dr Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, MP.
Speaking after the declaration, Dr Amoakohene described the initiative as a reflection of government’s shared commitment to protecting every child’s right to education, safety, and a brighter future.
“This landmark initiative reflects our shared commitment to protecting every child’s right to education, safety, and a brighter future,” he stated in a Facebook post.
He also expressed appreciation to the Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA, and the Embassy of Japan for partnering with Ghana to advance the cause.
“Together, we are building communities where every child can learn, grow, and thrive free from child labour,” Dr Amoakohene added.
The Child Labour Free Zone is expected to serve as a model for similar interventions across the country, with a focus on strengthening community monitoring, increasing school enrollment, and providing alternative livelihood support for families.
