Fake NIA Officer Jailed for 30 Days for Defrauding Ghana Card Applicants

A man who posed as a National Identification Authority staff member to defraud applicants has been sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment by the Gbese District Court.
Fidelis Samuel Mensah was convicted on his own guilty plea for stealing and defrauding by false pretences.
Court proceedings revealed he deceived members of the public at the NIA Regional Office in Accra by offering to help with Ghana Card registration and update services.
In the process, he unlawfully collected cash, mobile phones, and personal documents from victims.
Investigations by the NIA showed that Mensah had no authority to provide NIA services.
He was arrested through a joint operation by the NIA Police Investigation Unit and NIA staff after complaints from the public.
The NIA has urged citizens to remain vigilant and to deal only with authorised officials at designated service points.
The Authority said no staff member is permitted to collect money or personal items from applicants outside official procedures.
The conviction comes as the NIA intensifies public education to protect applicants from fraudsters who impersonate officials to extort money.
