Defence Ministry ‘Running Smoothly’ Despite No Substantive Minister- Gov’t Spokesperson

The Government Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has said Ghana’s defence architecture remains stable and effective, stating that the Defence Ministry “continues to be in safe hands” even without a substantive Defence Minister.

Speaking during an interview, Kwakye Ofosu said he would announce an appointment once President John Mahama communicates it to him, but stressed that government operations have not been affected by the current arrangement.

“I think that by and large, government has functioned effectively. There have not been lapses as far as I know in terms of Ghana’s defence architecture,” he said.

He added that the situation on the ground was improving, citing ongoing retooling efforts.

“Indeed, things appear to be improving on that front because they are acquiring additional firepower in terms of their equipment and retooling… Everything is on track.”

Kwakye Ofosu noted that any perceived lapse would not be due to the absence of a standalone minister, describing the appointment of ministers as the President’s prerogative.

“If there’s a lapse, it’s not because there has not been a standalone defence Minister….” It’s the President’s prerogative to appoint Ministers and once he deems it necessary, to do so at any moment, he will communicate it to me, and I will communicate it to you,” he said.

The Spokesperson emphasised continuity in the ministry’s operations, stating: “I want to stress that the Defence Ministry continues to be in safe hands, it continues to be in experienced hands and it is running smoothly.”

The Defence Ministry has been overseen by the deputy Defence minister, Brogya Genfi, since the demise of Edward Omane Boamah in a helicopter crash in August 2025.
