Committee on Reviving Kumawood Presents Findings to Ashanti Regional Minister

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has received the report of the committee tasked with reviving Kumawood.

The 17-member committee, headed by Bishop Ofori-Adu with actress Mercy Asiedu and Bill Asamoah as members, presented its report on May 13, 2025.

The Committee was tasked with assessing the current state of the industry and identifying key challenges; developing policies to attract investment and ensure sustainable growth; and exploring strategies to promote Ghanaian films both locally and internationally.

It was also tasked with the responsibility of strengthening film infrastructure by improving production facilities and training opportunities; enhancing film festivals and cultural showcases to celebrate Ghanaian storytelling and creativity; and fostering collaboration between stakeholders to create more opportunities for filmmakers, actors, and creatives.

Receiving the report, Dr Amoakohene commended the group for their dedication to meeting the deadline.

He promised to engage the needed stakeholders to address all lingering challenges and obstacles for the revival of the critical.

“I will go through it and add cover letters to the requisite sectors so that we will be able to open up the space to create jobs for the youth.”
Underscoring the essence of the industry, he recalled how President John Dramani Mahama alluded to it during the launch of the Black Stars Experience.

He assured the Committee of the central government’s commitment to reviving the industry.

“We want to encourage you… We look forward to getting more of your contribution to the movie industry…Moving on, I’m sure the Central Government will provide additional support to sustain it to make sure the industry is well catered for.”
