Barcelona Sack Xavi

La Liga side FC Barcelona have sacked Xavi Hernández after he led the club to premier league glory in the 2022/2023 season but failed to defend it.

The termination of his contract which would have run until 2025 was announced to have been prematurely terminated on Friday afternoon by the club.

He will, however, lead the team to face Sevilla on Sunday.

“FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has informed Xavi Hernández that he will not be continuing as first team coach in the 2024-25 season. The meeting happened at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper and was also attended by Sporting Vice-President Rafa Yuste, Director of Sport Anderson Luís de Souza, Deco, Xavi, Òscar Hernández and Sergio Alegre,” it said in a statement.

The Catalans expressed their appreciation to their former Captain as they wished him well in his future endeavors.

The club also made allusion to a new first team structure it is putting up. This will be made known to the public in the coming days.

Xavi retired from international football in 2019 and took the job at Barca in November 2021. He has since superintended over 141 games, winning 89 of them.

Barca failed to defend their league glory in the current season. They came second after Real Madrid with a gap of 12 points.

They hold 82 points after winning 25, losing 5 and drawing 25 games this season.
