Ablakwa Confronts Israeli Ambassador For Saying He’s “Disappointed in Ghana”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confronted the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia, HE Roey Gilad, for the latter’s criticism over Ghana’s decision to abstain from a vote in Vienna on whether Iran is complying with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards.

The envoy in his statement last week said he was disappointed in Ghana.

At a meeting between the Ghanaian Minister and the envoy, he expressed dissatisfaction with the commentary.

“It is worth emphasizing that in the meeting with the Israeli Ambassador, I registered Ghana’s strong displeasure at his recent public pronouncements questioning Ghana’s voting pattern at international organizations,” he reported in a Facebook post.

He further urged the diplomat to respect the country’s sovereign right to make independent decisions based on its “longstanding globally acclaimed foreign policy principles anchored on national interest as espoused by the 1992 Constitution, pacifist approach to peacebuilding, non-alignment, respect for the UN Charter, adherence to the rule-based international order, belief in multilateralism and strict compliance with international law.”

According to him, these cherished principles will continue to guide Ghana’s foreign policy imperatives within all international organizations.

He said this has become imperative as the West African country is serving on the UN Human Rights Council, chairing the governing board of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He further reiterated Ghana’s demand for a ceasefire and opt for a peaceful diplomatic resolution of their concerns.
