Asantehene Glad About UMaT Mining Collaboration

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has expressed gladness over the University of Mines and Technology’s (UMaT) collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Mining.

He is hopeful that the collaboration will foster development in the field of small scale mining and help do away with the negative impact brought by galamsey activities.

Otumfuo asked that scientific knowledge and ideas from both quarters be presented in order to help curb the menace.

“I’m happy there’s this collaboration between UMaT and Small Scale Miners. Sometime ago, galamsey became a problem in this country. And I believe the university will introduce the scientific methods for the betterment of mining, this is what we also look forward to the ministry of lands support in eradicating the defaulters”.

“If it’s done well, there will be money in the country but otherwise will destroy our river bodies.”

This was revealed during a visit by the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Mining and University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at the Manhyia Palace to inform on their activities held as a result of their collaboration.

According to the Chancellor for UMaT, Prof. Richard Kwasi Amankwah, the purpose of their visit was to inform the King on their “Small Scale Mining Awareness Day” activity that was held in the Ashanti Region.

“Small Scale Mining Awareness Day” is with the vision of ensuring that mining is carried out without interfering with the quality state of the environment.

“We started the small scale mining awareness day at Tarkwa last year and realizing the issues related with it we had to come together and develop means to reduce the negatives and uplift small scale mining. So we came and had to come before you for blessings.”

Officials present for the visit at the Manhyia Palace included the Vice President of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Mining, Mr Sampson Kofi Wiredu.
