Agya Koo Nimo Proposes Establishment of National Creative Arts Museum

The King of Palm Wine Music in Ghana, Kwabena Boa-Amponsem, known on stage as Agya Koo Nimo, has made a call for the establishment of a national Creative Arts Museum.

The idea is to accord the recognition needed to persons who have contributed to the country’s creative arts industry.

The 91-year-old also suggested featuring Ghanaian music at tourist attractions during a visit by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, to the musician on Wednesday.

The visit was at the instance of President John Dramani Mahama.

During the encounter, Hon. Gomashi praised Agya Koo Nimo’s contributions to Ghana’s cultural identity and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting aged creatives.

“This is not just a symbolic visit, it is a statement of care, recognition, and responsibility…That lack of recognition must change and it starts now.”

At the launch of the Black Star Experience at Independence Square on May 1, President Mahama acknowledged Agya Koo Nimo’s contribution to the country’s rich folklore and musical archive.

Agya Koo Nimo, 91, has to his name albums including Ashanti Ballads (1968), Osabarima (1990, re-issued 2000), Tete Wobi Ka (2000) and Highlife Roots Revival (2012, Riverboat Records).

He has received numerous awards including the Asanteman Award from Asantehene; an honorary life member of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music; gold medals from Ghana; and a Lifetime Achievement Award by the UEW Music Department.
