African Games: Black Princesses Win Gold After Overpowering Nigeria

The Black Princesses in a commanding comeback defeated the Super Falconets of Nigeria in the finals of the African Games Women’s tournament at the Cape Coast Stadium on Thursday night.

The victory won the Princesses the enviable Gold medals.

Both sides went into the highly anticipated game with an undoubted yearning for gold after advancing gloriously past the Group and Semis.

 

The teams showed dexterity on the pitch as both sides pressed for a win.

It was the Nigerians who had the first laugh as a mistake by Ghanaian goalkeeper Afi Amenyaku put the former in the lead in the 23rd minute.

A desperate Black Princesses with the deficit pressed to no avail for an equaliser despite creating some chances in the first half of the game.

However, their determination paid off in the second half when Tracy Twum levelled the scoreline with her breathtaking goal that lit the fully packed Cape Coast stadium with Mexican Wave.

In the 90th minute, the game was in stalemate with each side manoeuvring for the winner but Mukarama Abdul came to the rescue and delivered Ghana the crucial win for Gold in the 98th minute.

The victory marked Coach Yussif Basigi’s second major trophy with the Princesses in nine months.

Ghana now has 51 medals in the ongoing African Games- 11 gold, 24 silver and 16 bronze. They are sixth on the medal log.
