Chinese Businesses Explore Ghana’s Free Zones Scheme for Healthcare Investment

Chinese businesses are exploring Ghana’s Free Zones Scheme as a vehicle for investment in healthcare, particularly pharmaceuticals.
This came to light when the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) hosted a 26-member delegation from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) at its head office in Accra on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
The engagement, held ahead of the 3rd China–West Africa Medical and Health Industry, AI and Diagnosis Cooperation Summit and Expo, focused on how Chinese investors can leverage the Free Zones Scheme to set up, produce locally, and export to the wider African market.
Welcoming the delegation, GFZA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Mary Awusi, said Ghana’s Free Zones Scheme offers investors access to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with competitive incentives for manufacturing and value addition.
Leader of the delegation, Mr Junchen Liu, said the visit had provided deeper insight into the scheme and its potential for Chinese businesses.
Presenting details of the programme, the Director of Marketing and Investment Promotion, Ms Anita Novi Quashie, outlined the investment incentives, licensing categories and priority sectors, with emphasis on pharmaceuticals.
She explained that the scheme enables investors to benefit from tax incentives, import duty exemptions, 100% foreign ownership, and unfettered access to the African market through AfCFTA, while supporting local production of essential medicines and health commodities.
