Govt Intends to Transform Transport Sector into Integrated, Efficient System – Transport Minister

The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to transforming Ghana’s transport sector into a more integrated, efficient and resilient system capable of driving sustainable economic growth.

Speaking at the 2026 Transport Sector Review Conference under the theme, “Financing and Delivery of Resilient Transport Infrastructure and Services: A Big Push for Sustainable Economic Transformation”, the Minister said the development of transport infrastructure and services must go beyond individual projects and focus on creating seamless connections across rail, road, maritime, inland waterways and aviation.

Highlighting progress across the sector, Hon. Nikpe pointed to the revival of railway lines, the acquisition of two locomotives and 20 wagons, and ongoing efforts to expand rail freight operations.

In the maritime sector, he mentioned major infrastructure interventions, including the development of the new port at Akosombo, while in aviation, he cited the repurposing of Terminal 2 and the acquisition of 3D scanners as part of efforts to strengthen airport operations and security.

The transformation is also being extended to road transport, with the acquisition of new buses, expansion of DVLA offices and the continued digitisation of driver licensing and vehicle registration services aimed at improving mobility and service delivery.

According to the Minister, these interventions are part of a broader effort to build a transport system that moves people and goods efficiently and creates the conditions for a robust transport sector.
