Ghana and Russia Double Scholarships, Agree to Cooperate on Nuclear Energy, Other Strategic Areas

Ghana and Russia have agreed to double the number of Russian government scholarships available to Ghanaian students and to deepen cooperation in energy, security and multilateral affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed this following his ongoing official visit to Russia. According to him, Russian scholarships for Ghanaian students have now been increased from 120 to 240 each academic year.

The full scholarships will prioritise courses in Artificial Intelligence, engineering, petroleum sciences and pharmaceuticals, areas identified as critical to Ghana’s development agenda.

During bilateral engagements, the two countries also agreed to advance cooperation in Ghana’s peaceful nuclear energy programme and green transition objectives.

As part of Ghana’s drive for energy diversification, the cooperation will include plans to add 700 MW of nuclear power to the national grid.

In addition, Ghana and Russia will work together on global issues including counterterrorism, climate change, and reforms of the United Nations.
