BoG’s Second Deputy Governor Calls for Deeper Coordination to Scale Digital Finance Innovation

The Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Mrs Matilda Asante-Asiedu, has called for stronger coordination across Ghana’s financial sector to unlock the next phase of digital innovation, particularly in expanding access to finance for SMEs.

Speaking at the Distinguished Digital Finance Lecture in Accra on Monday, 17 August 2026, on the theme “Building Financial Systems That Innovate at Scale”, Mrs Asante-Asiedu said Ghana already has the foundations needed for scaled financial innovation.

“Ghana already has real foundations for scaled financial innovation. The task ahead of us is not invention. It is coordination,” she stated.

The Second Deputy Governor spotlighted the scale of Ghana’s digital payment ecosystem.

She noted that in June 2026 alone, mobile money platforms processed 954 million transactions valued at approximately GH¢493 billion.

Mrs Asante-Asiedu stressed that the next standard for financial inclusion must move beyond accounts and wallets.

She said the focus should now be on ensuring that individuals and businesses can access credit, insurance, and investment on fair terms, and when they need them.

She added that achieving this requires deeper collaboration between regulators, financial institutions, fintechs, and other stakeholders to build interoperable systems that are secure, inclusive, and supportive of growth.

The lecture underscored the Bank of Ghana’s commitment to building a financial system that is inclusive, secure, coordinated, and capable of supporting Ghana’s growth aspirations.
