KMA Extends Deadline for Decongestion Exercise at Alabar Trading Area

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has rescheduled its planned decongestion exercise for the Alabar Trading Area and other affected parts of the metropolis from August 17 to August 24, 2026.
In a press release issued on Monday, the Assembly said the decision followed an engagement between KMA Management and the leadership of the Alabar Motorcycle Association, led by its Public Relations Officer, Mr Sheriff Ennin.
The Association appealed to the Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, for additional time to reorganise their activities and address issues contributing to congestion in the area.
The initial exercise was expected to cover Alabar, Mbrom, Aboabo Station and Ashtown.
During the meeting, traders assured the Mayor and KMA Management of their commitment to working with the Assembly to restore order and improve the situation.
They agreed, among other measures, to discontinue the washing of motorcycles on the streets and the erection of canopies in the middle of the road.
The traders also requested the Assembly’s assistance to demarcate the frontage of their shops to clearly define trading spaces and ensure activities remain within designated areas.
Mayor Ofori Agyeman Boadi accepted the request and indicated that the Assembly would return to the area on August 24, 2026, to assess compliance with the agreed measures.
He noted that voluntary compliance would help restore order while also reducing unnecessary costs to the Assembly.
“KMA therefore urges all traders, motorcycle sellers and other operators within the affected areas to honour the commitments made and cooperate fully with the exercise,” the statement said.
