Day-to-Day Running of Health Institutions Not the Role of Boards- MoH

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reminded Boards of Ghana’s health institutions that the day-to-day administration of their facilities is not their responsibility, but that of management.
Speaking on the second day of the Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat in Ho, the Minister said there is a need for a clearer understanding of the distinct roles of Boards and management to ensure effective governance in the health sector.
“The day-to-day running of the institution is not the responsibility of the Board or Board members,” he stated.
Mr Akandoh noted that good governance is critical to ensuring that the country’s resources are effectively used to improve the well-being of Ghanaians.
He added that understanding the respective responsibilities of Boards and Chief Executive Officers is essential to preventing interference in the daily administration of institutions.
The Minister also used the opportunity to emphasise his personal commitment to ensuring that all Health Agencies have Letters of Intent, LIs, in place to guide good governance in their institutions.
He urged health institutions to exercise greater prudence in the use of public resources, particularly expenditure on seminars, training and travel, stressing that decisions must reflect the country’s current resource constraints.
According to him, the training at the retreat is aimed at helping participants better understand governance principles, avoid institutional infractions, and make decisions that promote accountability and effective management.
Hon. Akandoh encouraged all participants to actively engage in the sessions and gain a clear understanding of their respective roles and responsibilities.
