GSA Pushes For Joint Action To Fast-Track Air Cargo Clearance At AIA

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has initiated a series of stakeholder engagements at the Accra International Airport to address long-standing bottlenecks in air cargo clearance and handling.

The first meeting, held at the Accra International Airport on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, brought together regulators and service providers across the cargo value chain to agree on practical solutions to speed up processes.

Discussions centred on delays in import and exemption approvals, delays in cargo scanning and National Security endorsements, high storage charges, and cumbersome payment processes for Swissport invoices. Stakeholders also raised concerns about the handling of perishable exports and called for clearer guidance on the Ghana Standards Authority’s Easypass platform.

Head of Shipper Services and Trade Facilitation at the GSA, Mrs Monica Josiah, said the Authority has institutionalised the engagement to ensure that recurring challenges at the airport are tracked and resolved jointly.

“Such periodic engagements will be organised to monitor outstanding issues, strengthen collaboration among relevant institutions and service providers, and develop practical solutions to operational bottlenecks,” she said.

She said efficient and predictable cargo handling is essential to trade facilitation and to Ghana’s competitiveness as an air cargo hub, especially for businesses dealing in perishable and time-sensitive goods.

The initiative is part of GSA’s mandate under Act 1122 (2024) to protect the interests of shippers and to promote an efficient and business-friendly trading environment through coordinated interventions with state agencies and service providers.

Present were the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), National Security, Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Swissport, and other ground handlers. The meeting was co-chaired by Rev. Alex Yeboah of the GCAA and Mr Kingsley Fiakye Amporful of GACL.
