TEWU-GH Declares Indefinite Strike

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has announced an indefinite strike action effective today.

This is in response to TEWU-TUC’s appointment as workers’ representative on university governing councils instead of TEWU-GH.

In a statement, the group strike has become its sole option after authorities failed to address its longstanding demands and uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and democracy in the governance of tertiary education institutions.

“In accordance with our Union’s Constitution and the provisions of the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) and the powers vested in me, TEWU-GH HEREBY DECLARE AN INDEFINITE STRIKE, EFFECTIVE, TODAY THURSDAY, 3KD JULY 2025 UNTIL OUR DEMANDS ARE MET.”

TEWU-GH is demanding the withdrawal of TEWU-TUC’s appointment as workers’ representative on governing councils.

According to the group, the move is a blatant disregard for democratic principles and the rights of the majority union.

“We call for the establishment of a clear, transparent, and democratic process for determining union representation in tertiary education institutions, ensuring that the voice of the majority is respected and reflected in governance structures.”

Reiterating its commitment to a peaceful resolution, it noted, “We will not compromise on our demands or back down in the face of adversity.”

“We also call on other Labour Unions, stakeholders, and all well-meaning Ghanaians to support our just cause. Together, we can ensure that the rights and interests of workers in tertiary education institutions are protected and respected to guarantee industrial harmony in the Traditional Public Universities.”
