Asantehene Clarifies Queen’s Status After Ruling Awua Dumase Stool Isn’t Paternal

The overlord of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has ruled that the Awua Dumase stool is not paternal, bringing a dispute over the royal status of the Queen, Nana Owusuwaa Ayeboafo, to an amicable resolution.

At the Asanteman Council meeting on July 10, 2025, Otumfuo noted that the male stool was a royal one and therefore an entitlement of nephews, not children.

The Asantehene while making the ruling spotlighted the family tree of Awua Panin who founded Awua Dumase in the Bono Region, stating that his successor Kwabena Kyere was the last rightful occupant of the stool.

“Kwabena Kyere who was abducted by the British during one of the battles and killed at Racecourse {in Kumasi}. In his stead, his son, Kwame Korang, succeeded. Kwame Korang requested the vacant stool, and it was given to him because there was no royal available at the time to ascend.”

In further clarification, Otumfuo disclosed that the family of the Queen migrated to Berekum from Brosanko.

“We are talking about family tree, not succession. No matter how complex such a case is, I will delve into it and find the truth. The stool belongs to Kwabena Kyere. The family of the Queen requested to ascend the stool, they are not royals. The family of Kofi Ntow [whom the Queen sought to enstool] are sons to Owusu Boateng {the plaintiff}, not royals.”

Background
Mr Charles Kojo Boateng, a member of the royal house of Awua-Dumase challenged the royal status of the Queen following the appointment of a candidate to succeed Nana Kwame Korang VI.

He invoked the Great Oath to the effect that neither the queen nor the candidate was a royal.

Nana Ayeboafo countered the claim with the Great Oath, saying she was of the same bloodline as Mr Boateng.
