Ghana To Use $30 Million China Grant For Modern Market In Aflao

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the use of a $30 million grant from China for the construction of an ultramodern market in Aflao in the Volta Region.
According to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, this honours the President’s campaign promise to the people of Aflao in 2024.
“On the express instructions of President John Mahama, the funds will be used to construct a modern market in Aflao consistent with his promise during the 2024 electioneering campaign.”
Recalling a similar grant from China which was used to construct the Kotokuraba market in Cape Coast during the Mills/Mahama era, the lawmaker said the Aflao market will boost economic activity, link the Ho and Lome markets and improve livelihoods in an enclave which is a major West African trading hub.
The grant followed an agreement between Ghana and China on July 7, 2025, culminating in the signing ceremony that took place at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
”I signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa signed for the Chinese Government.”
