OSP Triggers Processes For Extradition Of Former Finance Minister

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has triggered processes to have Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, extradited for investigation and prosecution.
On June 2, 2025, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, announced the redeclaration of the former government official as a fugitive of justice.
This comes after Ofori Atta failed to honour the earlier timeline for his appearance and sent in correspondence to inform the Special Prosecutor he had been diagnosed with cancer and set for treatment on June 13, 2025, for which reason he would be unable to return to the jurisdiction as agreed.
However, it was the position of the Office that a suspect in a criminal investigation does not determine how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience.
“We want him here physically, and we insist on it…We will not countenance this conduct, not in this case,” Agyebeng stated.
Wanted List
Ofori Atta’s name has since been reentered into the OSP Wanted List.
“Ofori Atta is a wanted person and a fugitive of justice. His name is hereby reentered on the OSP’s list of wanted persons.”
Mr Agyebeng vowed to take all necessary legal steps to secure Mr Ofori Atta’s return to Ghana to answer criminal enquiries against him.
Pursuant to this, he said he had triggered processes for the issuance of an Interpol red notice for the location and arrest of the suspect in whichever jurisdiction pending his extradition or surrender.
In addition to that, he said he had “dispatched the request for extradition processes to be instituted for the provisional apprehension in any jurisdiction in which Mr Ofori Atta may be located or found and his extradition to the Republic of Ghana.”
Meanwhile, he said criminal charges will be filed in court against Mr Ofori Attain in due course either in absentia or otherwise.
