Running Mate must Embody Humility- NPP Ashanti Youth Organisers

Some Ashanti Regional Youth Organisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have appealed to the leadership of the party to consider a running mate who embodies humility and is favoured by the majority of the Ghanaian populace.

This, the group anticipates, would increase their chances of winning power for the third consecutive time, what they call “Breaking the 8”.

The recommendation came in a statement appended by six youth organisers in the Region to discredit an earlier statement issued by some youth organisers to announce widespread support for Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister for Energy, for the position of running mate.

In their statement, the six stated, “It’s important to clarify that this assertion does not accurately represent the sentiments of the majority of youth organisers in the Ashanti Region. The purported endorsement merely reflects the views of a few individuals and does not speak on behalf of the broader Youth Organisers or their Constituency.”

Citing Article 12 (b) of the Constitution of the NPP, the selection of a candidate falls within the mandate of the Presidential Candidate and Council of Elders and thereby inappropriate for youth organisers to exert undue pressure on the leaders.

“Such actions would constitute undue influence and run counter to the democratic principles of our party,” they noted.

They, however, recommended the leaders select a running mate with virtue and public approval.

“To ensure maximum support from party members and the Ghanaian populace, it is paramount for our party’s leadership to consider a candidate who embodies humility, commands respect across all sectors, possesses national appeal, and is widely liked by the majority of Ghanaians before finalising the choice of a vice-presidential candidate.”
