Group Petitions US Embassy In Ghana to Facilitate Ofori-Atta’s Extradition

A group calling itself Concerned Citizens of Ghana has petitioned the US Embassy in Accra to facilitate the extradition of the country’s former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

In a petition shared online, the group stressed the multiple charges of financial and economic crimes formally levelled against him, adding that his absence is delaying the criminal process and undermining the fight against corruption and economic wrongdoing.

“Ghana and the United States share a strong partnership rooted in democracy, transparency, and accountability. When a public official has been charged, the law must take its course—without fear, favour, or political shielding.”

It is, therefore, urging the U.S. Embassy to assist in verifying Mr Ofori-Atta’s presence or status in the United States; facilitate cooperation between U.S. and Ghanaian authorities; and support the expedited processing of any formal extradition request.

“We make no claim about guilt or innocence. We only insist that Mr Ofori-Atta returns to Ghana to face the charges in court, just like any other citizen.”

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has charged Ofori-Atta and seven others over revenue assurance contracts between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML).

They are facing 78 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences.
