Otumfuo Raises Concerns About Chieftaincy and Local Government Combination Under One Ministry

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has expressed concerns about the government’s decision to bundle chieftaincy and local government under a single Ministry.
His Majesty questioned the import of the decision, warning that the arrangement risks sidelining one of the two sectors.
Otumfuo said both areas are too broad and complex for one minister to oversee effectively.
“Chieftaincy involves traditional governance, cultural affairs, and community mediation across the country, while local government covers decentralisation, development planning, and service delivery at the district level,” he explained during a meeting with Parliament’s Select Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture, and Religious Affairs at Manhyia Palace on May 13, 2026.
He argued that managing both requires distinct expertise, time, and attention.
“How can the Minister give proper attention to local government and chieftaincy at the same time?”
Otumfuo asked, “Each area requires focus. Lumping them together means one will inevitably be sidelined?”
His Majesty recommended separating the two sectors to ensure that chieftaincy receives the necessary attention it deserves.
