No Increase in Dialysis Cost Yet – Korle-Bu After Backlash

The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has clarified that a proposed price increase for renal dialysis services is pending approval from the hospital’s management.

Earlier this week, a viral notice on social media had indicated a price hike for renal dialysis services, raising concerns among patients and their families. The cost was reported to have risen from GHS¢380 to GHS¢765.42.

However, KBTH released an official statement on Wednesday, September 27, asserting that any proposed fee adjustment would be submitted to Parliament through the Ministry of Health for authorization.

KBTH reassured patients that the current pricing would remain in effect until Parliament approves the proposed adjustment.

“This is to inform the general public and our patients that a price review proposal presented by the Renal Dialysis Unit is yet to receive consideration and approval by management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.”

“Any proposed fee will be forwarded to Parliament through the Ministry of Health for approval. It is only after the due parliamentary approval that any revised fees will be implemented,” it added.

The hospital emphasized its commitment to subsidizing dialysis reagents and services for many patients and pledged to prioritize the welfare of renal patients in all discussions.

“The Hospital management appreciates the challenges confronting renal dialysis patients. We will continue, as we have done over the years, to collaborate with stakeholders and philanthropists to help subsidize dialysis reagents and services for the treatment of many patients.”

The proposed price change has sparked apprehension among some patients and their loved ones. Renal dialysis is an essential life-saving treatment, but its cost can be prohibitive. Concerns have been raised regarding the affordability of treatment if prices continue to rise.
