NDC Calls For Arrest Of Bryan Acheampong Over “Treasonable” Comment

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned a statement by a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) about handing over power after the 2024 General Elections.

Bryan Acheampong who is the Member of Parliament for the Abetifi Constituency and Minister for Food and Agriculture, at a rally over the weekend was captured asserting the NPP won’t hand over power to the NDC after the elections.

“NDC party will collapse. If the NDC dares to use threats, violence and foolishness in the 2024 election, we will let them know we have the men. We will show them that we have the men. We have the men![He screamed to emphasize]. It will never happen that we, the NPP, will stand on a platform to hand over power to the NDC. It will never happen! We will make sure NPP remains in government at all cost,” Citinews quoted him as saying.

This was during a health walk organised by the NPP at Kwahu in the Eastern Region on Saturday, April 8th, 2023.

His comment has been described by the NDC as “utterly reckless and treasonable”.

In a statement from the General Secretary of the main opposition party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC condemned the comment.

According to the NDC, the comment adds up to several others by high-ranking NPP officials and attests to the ruling party’s “evil” strategy to retain power and subvert the country’s democracy.

It recalled, “At an NPP delegates conference in Kumasi in 2021, President Akufo-Addo expressed his determination to “hand over to an NPP Government in 2025”. This eerily reminds everyone of the Nana Addo-led desperate attempts to steal the 2008 elections in the strongroom of the electoral commission and other attempts by his desperate party to put dead bodies in water bodies in the Volta region all with a view to subverting the will of the people in that critical election.

“At a similar NPP conference in Accra in 2022, Director of Operations at the Presidency, Lord Commey, speaking on behalf of the President stated the grand plan of the NPP, saying “the power I have, I will not hand it over today or tomorrow”.”

Arrest
The NDC wants Bryan Acheampong arrested by the Ghana Police Service as his comment is “incendiary and subversive”.

It wants Bryan arrested just as the NDC Suame Constituency Youth organiser, Koampa Razak Avoliya, was arrested and prosecuted earlier in February this year for a similarly “inciteful” comment.

“We urge the Ghana Police Service to act with dispatch in this matter. We recall the alacrity with which it recently apprehended and charged the Suame Constituency Youth Organiser of the NDC for expressing views that were deemed to be inciteful.

“No one is in any doubt that the statement of Bryan Acheampong is even more incendiary and subversive. We, therefore, expect the same level of speedy action from the Ghana Police Service in arresting Bryan Acheampong and bringing him to book.”
