Mahama Pledges Diaspora Role in Governance

President John Dramani Mahama says his government is pushing for constitutional reforms to expand diaspora participation in national governance.

Speaking at a Town Hall meeting in London on Sunday, he outlined ongoing constitutional review processes aimed at allowing eligible dual citizens to serve at both the parliamentary and ministerial levels.

“For too long, our brothers and sisters abroad have contributed to Ghana’s growth through remittances, skills and ideas, yet remained at the margins of decision-making. That must change,” he said.

The President also highlighted Ghana’s improving global economic outlook, noting that the country is increasingly recognised internationally as a reference point for recovery and reform.

He also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to African integration, emphasising the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a catalyst for shared prosperity.

“Regional cooperation under AfCFTA is not just about trade. It is about building a larger market that creates jobs for our youth and opportunities for our businesses,” President Mahama stated.

The Town Hall, attended by professionals, business owners, students and community leaders, underscored the strategic role of the Ghanaian diaspora in advancing Ghana’s socio-economic transformation and strengthening international partnerships.

The government officials at the event said the Investment Summit would provide a platform for UK-based Ghanaian investors to explore opportunities in energy, agribusiness, technology and infrastructure back home.

President Mahama urged the community to remain engaged, saying: “Your voice, your capital and your expertise are critical to the Ghana we are building together.”
