Ghana, South Korea Sign First Visa Waiver Agreement

Ghana and South Korea have signed a historic Visa Waiver Agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
This marks the first such deal between the two countries in nearly 50 years of formal bilateral relations.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the agreement on Facebook after signing it alongside South Korean Foreign Minister H. E. Cho Hyun on the sidelines of the ongoing Africa-Korea Foreign Ministers Meeting.
“This is the first Visa Waiver Agreement by our two nations in almost 50 years of formal bilateral relations,” Mr Ablakwa stated in a Facebook post on Monday.
The Minister said negotiations will continue to extend the waiver to holders of ordinary passports.
That expansion, if concluded, would ease travel for business people, students, tourists and other Ghanaians visiting South Korea, he noted.
“This is the first step. Negotiations will continue to bring on board holders of ordinary passports,” he added.
Mr Ablakwa described the deal as delivery on key priorities set during President John Dramani Mahama’s working visit to South Korea in March this year.
“I am delighted we are delivering on key priorities following the working visit of President Mahama to South Korea in March this year,” the Minister said.
The visa waiver for diplomatic and service passport holders is expected to facilitate official engagements, technical cooperation and high-level exchanges between Accra and Seoul.
