Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO Sacked

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced the termination of Dr. Adam Atiku’s appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

This follows his visit to the hospital on April 22 to obtain first-hand information regarding the circumstances surrounding a patient’s death.

The death reported on social media over the weekend was blamed on negligence on the part of the medical officers.

Following his assessment, Hon Akandoh communicated the dismissal of the CEO.

“As I speak to you now, we have thanked him for the services he rendered at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. We believe it is time for someone else to continue as CEO. He has been sacked with immediate effect,” he is quoted to have said by JoyNews.

“Relieving him of his position is not only because of the incident that happened on Sunday, and the appointing authority owes nobody any explanation for hiring or firing an employee.”

This move has been criticized by some observers who think the Minister is only shoving the real problem.

The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, believes the dismissal will in no way solve the lingering problem and therefore advocated for reversal.
“The spontaneous dismissal of the Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO is not a solution. The Minister must reflect and rescind. Such actions blur the real problems. We need strong institutions, not strong men,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, the hospital has constituted a committee to probe the death.
