Hon. Elvis Morris Donkor Explains Rationale Behind Burning Of Excavators
Vice Chairman of Ghana Minerals Commission, Hon. Elvis Morris Donkor, has given explanation to the burning of excavators at illegal mining sites.
According to the Lawmaker for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankesse, it is not part of their resolve to burn excavators, but the situation at hand has inspired that.
He further revealed that burning the excavators is the best way to reduce illegal mining activities, since other approaches have failed to end the menace.
Speaking on ‘Nkwantannanso’ morning show, he told George Opoku Mensah Agudey that, “We are not seizing any equipment, no equipment will be returned home, they will all be destroyed on site. No excavator, nothing will come back home.”
“It is difficult to return home those excavators on various sites because mostly the operators take off their control-board which make it impossible for the machine to move, so we have no choice than to burn them.”
He added that the fight against illegal has been extremely difficult, but the Government is putting a lot in place to achieve that.
“The fight against illegal mining has been difficult because some Chiefs, Police, District Chief Executives and other prominent people are involved, but the Government is putting a lot in place to achieve the best for the country.”
