Anti-galamsey Demo: Accra High Court Withdraws Injunction at A-G Command

The Accra High Court has withdrawn its injunction order against Pressure group Generational Right Protection Society (GRPS)’s planned demonstration against illegal mining.
The court on Thursday granted an injunction application by the Ghana Police Service to restrain the group led by Broadcast Journalist Okatakyie Afrifa from carrying on with the demonstration slated for Monday.
The withdrawal comes at the instance of the Attorney-General, Dominic Ayine.
A statement by the Deputy A-G, Justice Srem Sai on April 25 said meetings were held with the security and intelligence agencies on Thursday after which the Attorney-General directed that the application for injunction to restrain the anti-galamsey demonstrators be withdrawn.
“The injunction application was duly withdrawn this morning,” he confirmed in a Facebook post.
He noted that the demonstration would be allowed to go on exactly as the demonstrators have proposed, as he assured that the right to demonstrate is protected by the Constitution.
He asserted that President John Mahama understands the true meaning of this right.
“His Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, will not violate or allow anyone to violate the citizen’s right to demonstrate.”
Protest
Protesters will converge at 4 pm on April 28 at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
They will march along the Ring Road and then picket at the Liberation Square opposite the Jubilee House.
