August 6 Helicopter Crash: Blow-By-Blow Account of How the Accident Happened

According to Aircraft Accident Investigator Captain Paul Forjoe, the Z-9 EH helicopter that was involved in the August 6 crash departed Accra for Brofoyedru under visual flight rules in marginal weather.

Presenting a report on the accident on November 11, 2025, he described the flight to Brofoyedru as uneventful, adding that it was 90 miles from Accra and about 10 miles from Obuasi.

“As the flight approached Obuasi, visibility deteriorated rapidly due to mist and low clouds. At 9:56, the crew entered Instrument Meteorological Condition ( IMC)- diffuse clouds and transitioned to Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), which is navigated on the aircraft’s instruments.”

He further recounted how the crew initiated a climb to cross terrain.

“Seconds before impact, the crew stated that they could see the high ground below, so they got over it. Sadly, thereafter, the helicopter that was flying up without any change in its power or in the pitch lost height and impacted a ridge line at about 70ft above sea level.

The crash happened at about six and a half miles from the destination at 9:58 am.
