Ghana, Mozambique Explore Extradition, Legal Assistance Agreement

Ghana and Mozambique are exploring a formal legal cooperation agreement covering extradition, transfer of convicted persons, and mutual legal assistance.
The discussions were held at The Law House on Wednesday when the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem Sai, together with the Director of Public Prosecutions, received Mozambique’s Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Mateus Finiasse Saize.
In a Facebook post, Mr Srem Sai said the meeting was held on behalf of the Attorney-General.
“We discussed the proposal of our visiting counterparts on the possibility of the two countries establishing a formal arrangement on (1) extradition, (2) transfer of convicted persons, and (3) mutual legal assistance,” he stated.
According to him, these issues “have, more than ever, occupied the front pages of law enforcement across the globe,” underscoring the need for stronger cross-border legal frameworks.
The Mozambican Minister was accompanied by his country’s High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Fortunato Albrinho.
No timeline was given for the conclusion of the proposed arrangement, but officials say the talks form part of broader efforts to deepen judicial and security cooperation between Ghana and Mozambique.
If finalised, the agreement would provide a legal basis for the two countries to hand over fugitives, facilitate the transfer of prisoners to serve sentences in their home countries, and support each other with evidence and information in criminal investigations.
