Garden City University to Establish Teaching Hospital

TGarden City University College is set to build a 100-bed teaching hospital as part of efforts to expand medical training and address healthcare gaps in the Ashanti Region.
The announcement was made on May 8, 2026, when the university’s management, led by Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo, introduced the new Vice Chancellor, Eric Kwesi Ofori, to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace.
Professor Owusu-Dabo said the facility would serve as a training ground for doctors and physician assistants once completed.
“We are building a teaching hospital to train students, and we are introducing new courses. The 100-bed capacity teaching hospital, when completed, will be used to train doctors and physician assistants,” he said.
The update formed part of the periodic report to the Asantehene, who played a key role in the institution’s establishment.
Other Projects
The delegation also outlined plans to tackle unemployment among trained nurses.
Professor Owusu-Dabo said many graduates remain idle at home while awaiting government clearance for employment, often losing practical skills in the process.
“To solve this, we intend to introduce what we call the Nurse Practitioner, so that they move from home to home to offer medical services to our mothers, fathers, and children. We are also engaging in talks to get accreditation from the Ghana Tertiary Accreditation Commission,” he explained.
Garden City University College received its charter status in recent years and has since expanded its academic programmes.
“The university is 25 years old. We are chartered now. We are doing a lot of things,” Professor Owusu-Dabo said.
Otumfuo commended the university for training professionals serving across the country and urged the new leadership to sustain its momentum.
“The university has trained many people who are serving the country. Continue to dedicate yourselves,” he said.
He added that he would visit the campus soon to assess developments firsthand.
