Ashanti Regional NPP MPs Demand Modern Fire Safety Infrastructure In Markets

The Ashanti NPP Parliamentary Caucus has called for the installation of modern fire safety infrastructure in various markets to curb the spate of fire outbreaks.

This follows Tuesday night’s fire outbreak at the Suame Post Office, which has affected 25 out of 44 shops and 192 shells within the facility, according to the Ghana National Fire Service.

According to the Caucus, the need for hydrants, surveillance systems, and dedicated fire posts has become urgent as the Region has suffered repeated market fires, each time destroying years of hard work and investment by ordinary Ghanaians.

“These fires have become one too many, and the people of Ashanti deserve more than routine words of sympathy and empty promises,” it said in a statement.

It is also demanding a full-scale, transparent investigation into the Suame fire and publishing of same; Emergency relief and compensation packages for affected traders; and a clear policy framework to permanently address the spate of market fires across the Ashanti Region.

Meanwhile, it expressed its deepest sympathies to the affected traders.
