EOCO Probing Wontumi over Transactions with Ghana Exim Bank- Suhuyini

The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Suhuyini Sayibu Alhassan, has disclosed that the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) borders around a private transaction with Ghana Exim Bank.

The lawmaker posits that the arrest was not unlawful as the alleged crime relates to finances which fall within the mandate of the EOCO.

He however noted it was yet to be established if Wontumi refused to honour earlier invitations from the office to have provoked his arrest in the manner it happened.

“EOCO is within bound to deal with this… Before we hear from EOCO officially, it will be erroneous to say they breached the law,” he said in an interview on JoyNews.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on May 27 was arrested by officials of EOCO after honouring an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Suhuyini confirmed that the CID invitation dealt with his alleged involvement in illegal mining in the country.

NPP supporters and executives responded to the news of the arrest on Tuesday by gathering at the EOCO headquarters.

Subsequent reports indicated that Wontumi had fallen ill and was transported to an undisclosed health facility for medical attention.
