Akuffo Addo not Ready to Listen to Anyone – Public Interest Activist

Speaking on Nkwatannanso on Opemsuo Radio, he indicated that the economic issues we have in Ghana have existed for years. He blamed the Government for worsening the economic situation.

“The law gives the President power to do everything. The inflation in the system is caused by the systems and forces that can be controlled by the government,” he said.

He added that the NPP government promised to cut taxes to boost the economy but it is doing otherwise.

“This government said it has no money and needs taxes to survive but it is spending money as if we have a lot. Government has not cut its expenditure,” he said.

On the issue of taxes on betting and lottery winnings, he said the government has not been fair to the youth, especially the unemployed because he is not creating jobs but taxing their only means of survival.

However, Mr George Agyei, a political analyst said the government has the right to tax betting and lottery winnings. He explained that, their state of unemployment does not mean they should not be taxed.

The political analyst added that his only concern is the Excise Duty taxes. He explained that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has recently complained that few goods arrive at the port which means less tax.

“If we continue taxing the goods at the port, the amount of goods will continue to reduce and it will negatively impact the economy. Prices of goods will keep increasing and businesses may collapse which will lead to employment,” he said.

Parliament recently approved four financial bills presented by the government to generate approximately GH4 billion to boost domestic revenue mobilization. These bills are also essential for facilitating the Board approval for the International Monetary Fund Programme staff –level agreement.
