Suspended Chief Justice Runs to ECOWAS Court

The suspended Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, has beseeched the ECOWAS Community Court, filing a lawsuit against the government over her suspension.
The suit was filed on July 4, 2025, at a court based in Nigeria, according to the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai.
In a Facebook post, he said Her Ladyship repeated the same allegations of human rights violations which are currently pending before the Supreme Court and the High Court in respect of the ongoing removal processes.
“Essentially, Her Ladyship argues that by her suspension, she ‘has effectively been removed from her official capacity without a final determination, impairing her right to function and serve in a position she was constitutionally appointed to’.”
The Chief Justice was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama in consultation with the Council of State after a prima facie was established in three petitions submitted for her removal.
A five-member Committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang of the Supreme Court was then constituted in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution to probe the allegations.
