Supporters Resort To Prayer Ahead of Ghana-Egypt Clash

Some Ghanaian supporters in Ivory Coast have run to their maker for help in the Black Stars’ clash against Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

A viral video of the congregation showed them gathered on a compound with some kneeling and others on their feet with hands in the air.

The decision to resort to prayer follows Chris Hughton’s side’s disappointing start in the tournament on Sunday, January 14 at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny.

The four-time champions lost to Cape Verde, who make their fourth appearance in AFCON in a 2-1 scoreline.

The result pushed Cape Verde to the top of Group B with three points while it pushed Ghana, who made their 24th appearance in the tournament to the bottom.

Ghana will next face Egypt, who levelled with Mozambique in their opening game tomorrow, January 18, 2024.

This will be the fifth encounter between Egypt and Ghana at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

They have met three times previously in the group and once in the final, which Egypt won in 2010 (1-0).

Hughton is aware of the implications of anything short of a win in their second game.

Ghana exited the 2021 tournament at the group stage after an abysmal performance.
