Aberewa Ne Nkran; The Dismantled Crime Hub Hidden In Subri Forest Reserve

Personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in conjunction with officials of the Forestry Commission have discovered a lawless zone concealed in the Subri Forest Reserve in the Wassa East District of the Western Region.

This was one of the Anti-galamsey surgical operations conducted in three military commands.

The task force discovered the lawless Abrewa Ne Nkran community, which was home to over 10,000 nationals from Nigeria, Guinea, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

The said community was founded by illegal miners and has since graduated into a crime hub with crimes including child prostitution, drug abuse, counterfeit operations, and alleged human trafficking.

“The place is full of illegal miners with all manner of illegal activities within this community. There are incidents of child trafficking, child prostitution, drug abuse, money laundering, counterfeits,” they said in a briefing posted by JoyNews.

Following the swoop conducted at midnight, the officers rescued some victims, effected arrests and dismantled the entire community.

“We raided this community and we managed to get rid of the entire illegal hub that was well constructed by these illegal miners. We managed to rescue a few foreign young Nigerians. One of them confided in us that her madam brought her and enrolled her in prostitution in this village.

“That is the impact of illegal mining and what is bringing to the community. We found drugs and some of the people we arrested appeared drowsy in the wee hours of the morning. There are makeshift brothels and we saw some of the activities they are doing here. It’s very terrible.”

Meanwhile, they reported extensive damage to the forest reserve.

“There is no place in the reserve they are not mining and the impact of that on the Subri Forest Reserve is very devastating.”
