NCA Introduces Technology Neutrality
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced the introduction of technology neutrality in the country.
The initiative is aimed at correcting the market imbalances and boosting consumer choice in the telecommunications sector for non-SMP operators, the Authority notes.
This, it said, will in the long run favour companies including Vodafone and AT in the provision of 4G services to their customers.
“This initiative will grant Vodafone and AT the authorisation to re-farm their spectrum assignment in the 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 2100MHz bands to provide 4G services, subject to paying an annual premium,” a statement from NCA said.
It added that technology neutrality is one of the remedial actions to address Significant Market Power (SMP) concerns.
As benefits, the NCA said the Technology Neutrality will afford communication operators who do not currently have 4G services the opportunity to deploy it within their current spectrum assignment, levelling the playing field and enhancing their competitiveness.
Additionally, it will give the option for non-SMP operators with 4G services to re-farm portions of their current spectrum assignment to improve the quality of their 4G services and enhance consumer choice for 4G services, the Authority outlined.
The NCA further assured of its commitment to foster an environment that encourages competition, investment, and technological advancement for the benefit of all stakeholders.
